DCS HEAD DANCE COACH
General Statement of Job
Under general supervision, the employee is responsible for coaching and mentoring high school students participating in the Davie County High School Dancing Boots dance team. The coach organizes and supervises practices, performances, and team meetings, and provides instruction in dance technique, choreography, performance skills, and team routines to prepare students for school events, performances, competitions, and other community appearances throughout multiple seasons of the year. The employee must positively motivate students while fostering teamwork, discipline, school spirit, and an appreciation for dance as a performance art, a physically rigorous discipline, and a representative activity of the school. The employee reports to the building-level administrator(s).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Collaborates with school staff and school administration to promote a positive school culture and strong school spirit.
- Works with the school administration in scheduling transportation and facilities for practices, performances, and events.
- Assigns duties to assistant coach(es) as necessary.
- Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
Promotes character development, teamwork, leadership, discipline, and personal responsibility among team members.
- Establishes and maintains high standards of student behavior and provides proper supervision of students.
- Models and promotes positive sportsmanship, professionalism, and appropriate conduct toward students, staff, officials, spectators, and community members.
Instructs students, individually and in groups, in dance technique, choreography, performance skills, conditioning, and safety practices.
- Develops a regular rehearsal schedule and organizes practice time to promote both individual skill development and cohesive team performance.
- Evaluates student performance and determines team placements, formations, and performance assignments based on skill level, commitment, and team needs.
- Observes students during rehearsals and performances to assess individual and team improvement needs.
Follows district and school regulations governing extracurricular activities, as well as any applicable competition or performance guidelines.
- Monitors the academic performance of team members to ensure eligibility requirements are met.
- Maintains required records, including emergency information, uniform and equipment inventory, choreography documentation, and other related records.
- Plans, coordinates, and oversees team fundraising in accordance with school and district policies; ensures proper management of funds raised.
- Follows established procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of uniforms, equipment, and supplies.
- Follows established procedures in the event of a student injury or medical emergency.
Serves as a representative of the Dancing Boots program and promotes the team in a positive manner within the school and community.
- Conducts interest meetings, auditions, and informational sessions to encourage student participation.
- Communicates appropriately with parents/guardians, booster organizations, school administration, and community partners regarding team activities.
- Participates in special activities including parent meetings, banquets, award ceremonies, assemblies/pep rallies, school events, and community performances.
Attends meetings, training, and other professional learning opportunities to improve coaching and instructional performance.
Performs any other related duties as assigned by the school principal or other appropriate administrators.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must meet all requirements of Davie County Schools for extracurricular coaches and advisors.
- Experience coaching or directing dance at the high school, collegiate, studio, or competitive level preferred.
- Strong knowledge of dance technique, choreography development, performance preparation, and safety practices.
- Hold or be willing to obtain an NC CDL (Bus License) preferred
- Ability to develop and maintain trust, positive rapport, and effective working relationships with students, families, staff, and community members while maintaining appropriate boundaries and confidentiality
- Exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, and evaluate dance to improve individual and team performance.
- Ability to motivate students while ensuring their safety, supervision, and well-being at all times.
- Demonstrated aptitude for leadership, organization, and program development.
